What Aston Martin code P1501 means

Vehicle Speed Sensor Out Of Self Test Range

DB9 preliminary diagnostic manual · section 2-234

Manufacturer fault-analysis procedure

Manual fault definition

P1500 - Intermittent VSS signal
P1501 - VSS signal received during KOER test

Cautions and notes

CAUTION: This code may be generated in the
Primary or Secondary Powertrain Control Module
(PCM). Check that you are working on the correct
half of the engine.

NOTE: This code may be generated by excessive
wheel spin when driving on slippery surfaces
with traction control switched off.

NOTE: The VSS sensor is used only in engine management. The speedometer reading is derived
from the four ABS sensor signals.

Test sequence and decision path

1. Connect the WDS and set up to monitor the VSS
and ABS sensor signals during a road test.
Drive the vehicle at normal road speeds and note
the indications of the speedometer needle and
the indicated speeds from the VSS and ABS
sensors. There should be a close correlation
between all three signals.
If there is any significant difference between the
ABS sensor speed and the indication on the
speedometer, check for any ABS codes and
resolve these first. Return to this procedure only if
P1500-1501 are logged again without any ABS
codes.
If the ABS and speedometer readings agree but
the VSS reading is different, complete the circuit
checks in step 2.

2. a) Circuit Check - VSS Sensor

Disconnect the VSS sensor and measure the
sensor resistance from pin 1 to pin 2. The sensor
resistance should be approximately 780

Ω

. If in
range, continue with this procedure. If out of
range, replace the sensor, clear all DTCs and run
a road test to ensure that the problem is resolved.
b) Circuit Check - VSS to PCM
Fit the breakout box to each PCM in turn.
Measure continuity from VSS connector pin 1 to
primary PCM connector pin C0635-33 or
secondary PCM connector C0638-33.
Measure continuity from VSS connector pin 2 to
primary PCM pin C0635-32 or secondary PCM
connector C0638-32.
If either resistance is greater than 5.0

Ω

, repair the
partial or complete open circuit in the faulty line.
If no circuit faults are identified, go to step 4.
If any circuit faults are identified, service as
necessary. Clear the fault code and run the KOER
Test to ensure that the problem is resolved.

3. Check the continuity of the VSS signal screening
from both the VSS and PCM terminations to chassis ground.
Also check for the proximity of any sources of
interference close to the sensor leads. Reroute
any suspect sources of radio interference.
If any circuit faults are identified, service as
necessary. Clear the fault code and run the KOER
Test to ensure that the problem is resolved.
