Cautions and notes

CAUTION: This code may be generated in the
Primary or Secondary Powertrain Control Module
(PCM). Check that you are working on the correct
half of the engine.

NOTE: If P0340 is logged, analyse the P0340 problem
first.

Test sequence and decision path

1. Switch off the ignition and disconnect the relevant PCM.
Install the break-out box to the PCM harness connector only.
Switch on the ignition and check for +12V ignition at the following pins on the break-out box.

Primary PCM (Right Hand)

Ignition coil 1 - Primary PCM Pin C0636-1
Ignition coil 2 - Primary PCM Pin C0636-38
Ignition coil 3 - Primary PCM Pin C0636-24
Ignition coil 4 - Primary PCM Pin C0636-39
Ignition coil 5 - Primary PCM Pin C0636-12
Ignition coil 6 - Primary PCM Pin C0636-35

Secondary PCM (Left Hand)

Ignition coil 7 - Secondary PCM Pin C2464-1
Ignition coil 8 - Secondary PCM Pin C2464-38
Ignition coil 9 - Secondary PCM Pin C2464-24
Ignition coil 10 - Secondary PCM Pin C2464-39
Ignition coil 11 - Secondary PCM Pin C2464-12
Ignition coil 12 - Secondary PCM Pin C2464-35
If +12 volts is available at all pins, go to step 2.
If +12 volts is not available at any pin, check the
+12V ignition supply through the underbonnet
fusebox F7 to the ignition coil connectors pin 2.
If +12 volts is not available at only one pin, go to
step 3.

2. Disconnect the break-out box and connect a substitute pair of PCMs. Run a KOER test to ensure
that the problem is resolved.
If the substitute PCMs resolves the problem, fit a
permanent replacement.
If the substitute PCMs do not resolve the problem,
the fault is intermittent breakdown in the ignition
coil. Replace the suspect ignition coil.
Remove the substitute PCMs and reconnect the
original. Run a KOER test to ensure that the problem is resolved.

3. Remove the inlet manifold and spark plug cover
from the affected side of the engine.
Refer to the circuit on the previous page and
check continuity of the wiring from underbonnet
fusebox F7 to pin 2 of the ignition coil connector.
Also check continuity from pin 2 of the ignition
coil connector to the relevant PCM connector pin
(see list in step 1).
If a wiring fault is identified, service the wiring as
necessary. Reconnect all components and run a
KOER test to ensure that the problem is resolved.
If no wiring fault is identified, swap the misfire
detection modules between engine banks. Run
the engine to see if the fault swaps to the other
bank. If so, change the defective misfire module.
If swapping the misfire modules has no effect,
replace the relevant ignition coil. Refit and reconnect all components and run a KOER test to
ensure that the problem is resolved.
