Cautions and notes
NOTE: The crankshaft position is detected by monitoring
the crankshaft position sensor signals. The signals
should follow a regular pattern of 35 pulses and then a
one pulse gap (36 tooth wheel on the crankshaft nose
with one tooth missing) for each engine revolution.
Variations in the crank position sensor pulses are monitored using a fast electronic counter in the Engine
Control Module (PCM), the number of counts between
successive crankshaft sensor pulses are noted. Any variation in counts due to minor machining tolerances in
the crankshaft toothed wheel are noted for the first
engine revolutions and remembered as a standard
against which all future crank position signals are monitored.

Test sequence and decision path
1. Connect the WDS and check that P0315 is
logged.
2. Using the WDS oscilloscope, monitor the crank
sensor signals with the engine running. The signals should follow a regular pattern of 35 pulses
and then a one pulse gap. This sequence must
repeat every engine revolution for both sensors.
3. If either sensor shows an erratic pulse pattern,
replace the sensor and recheck the pulse pattern.
4. Access the crank sensors and check for physical
security.
If any problem is identified with sensor security,
service the engine as necessary. Clear the P0315
code and run a KOER test to ensure that the problem is resolved.
If no problems are identified, go to step 5.
5. If the problem persists, check for wiring problems
in the sensor circuit between PCM pins C0636-34
and C0636-45 (primary) or between C2464-34
and C2464-45 (secondary). Service the wiring as
necessary and run a KOER test to ensure that the
problem is resolved.
6. If no wiring problems are identified, contact
